On December 23, 1960, the constitution of the Adega Cooperativa de Penalva do Castelo was drawn up.
The quality of the first wines and the reward for the effort of those who entrusted their grapes to the Cooperative helped to convince many undecided people, who gradually swelled the cooperative movement. The fame of the wines was consolidated, both in whites and in reds, the work grew, and new challenges emerged. Today, everyone recognizes that it was worth it. The Cooperative has around 1,000 active members, representing 1,200 hectares of vineyards, produces an average of seven million liters of wine annually and has the most modern vinification, aging and bottling technology.
Part of the wine continues to be sold to the most prestigious wine bottling companies in Dão, respecting partnerships with decades of healthy coexistence. The remaining wine is destined for the winery’s own brands, both in bag in box, which represents around two million liters, and bottled, which already reaches around one million bottles. Own brands bring the name of Penalva do Castelo to the four corners of the world, give it the status of one of the largest companies in the county and are an unavoidable reference for Dão wines. It will not be surprising, therefore, above all, that the cooperative is the apple of the eye of all associates and their families.
